Rourkela City on Independence Day: A New World Record

Rourkela is poised to make a new world record. The citizens have planned to make the longest flag in the world for this year’s Independence Day. This unique idea has been floated by a local NGO by the name Smile Forever Foundation.

According to their Facebook posts, the flag is supposed to be over 10 km long and will be unfurled from Bisra Chowk, Rourkela at 8:30 am on 15th August. This will be longest flag in history and is set to be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as well the Limca Book of Records.

Santosh Biswal, the founder of Smile Forever Foundation, has put together a promotion for the event as can be seen below.

Their Facebook profile and social club pages have additional information on the event as seen below.

This event is the result of months of work by many artists. The itinerary includes a flag march around Ring Road, singing the National Anthem with the all the Rourkela citizens present and dances like Odishi, Kathak and Bharatnatyam. As it is also the 100 year anniversary of the Jaliawallah Bagh massacre there is going to be a program dedicated to the martyrs as well.

We implore all Rourkela residents to attend this event and help this beautiful city get into the record books. With regards.

Update: An NGO from Raipur, Chattishgarh decided to challenge the record by making and unfurling a 15 km tricolour. To combat them, Smile Forever decided a longer flag was needed. So on Independence Day, Rourkela witnessed a 16 km long flag being unfurled from Hanuman Vatika to Sector 2 Chowk via DAV Chowk and Ambagan.

The preparations were kept secret and no word of it was leaked out. We knew because we had people on the scene. So Rourkela residents still have a good claim on the record despite the last minute scare.
